The Zone
Developed between 2013-2020, The Zone focuses on the vast area of land that was evacuated in 1986 after the accident in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It explores nuclear colonialism, forced migration, eco-nationalism, and the study of future visions, amongst other themes.
The Zone (Wallpapers) looks at the last remnants of the people who lived in the apartments of Pripyat. The city was gradually emptied as residents, ‘Liquidators’, and looters removed its contents. In some apartments, little remains apart from wallpapers that are peeling away from the walls, revealing layers of old newspapers pasted beneath them before the decoration was added. Concealed for decades by these wallpapers, the newspapers become a record of the propaganda and political narratives that surrounded the life of the inhabitants of this now-abandoned city.
